Sharing a specific folder in Mac OS X
Confi guring a Mac to Share with Other Computer Types
The default sharing protocol is Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), which is used to share fi les with
other Macs. If other computers need access too, click the Options button at right side of the
Sharing window (see Figure 9.2), and then enable one or both of the other protocols too:
Share Files and Folders Using FTP Apple Filing Protocol
For sharing with Unix and
Linux systems. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
Share Files and Folders using SMB
For sharing with Windows-based PCs. SMB stands
for Server Message Block.
If you're sharing fi les with a Windows-based PC, you'll need to join the appropriate
Windows workgroup:
1.
Choose System Preferences
Network Preferences, and ensure that the padlock is
unlocked. If it's locked, click it and, when prompted, enter an administrator name and
password. Click OK.
2.
Click Network, select an interface, click Advanced, and click WINS.
3.
Enter a name for your Mac in the NetBIOS Name fi eld, and enter the name of the
workgroup you want to join in the Workgroup fi eld.
4.
Click OK, and then click Apply.
