Universal Serial Bus (USB)
USB is the jack-of-all-trades port, used to connect many different types of input and output
devices to a computer. Most keyboards and mice use this interface, as do fl ash RAM drives,
digital cameras, printers, scanners, and almost any other type of device you may have. USB
ports are denoted by the USB symbol, shown in Figure 4.14.

There are several different sizes and shapes of USB connectors. The most common type is a
USB Standard A/B cable. The Standard A end connects to the computer and is wide and fl at
(see Figure 4.15). The Standard B end connects to the device, such as a printer, and is more
square-shaped (see Figure 4.16).
