The official standard for countries in the European Union is 230v, but some
countries still use the older 220v standard. A power supply designed for
230v will work on a power grid that provides 220v power and vice versa.
This small variation is well within acceptable tolerance.

A notebook PC typically has a power cord with an AC adapter built into it. The AC
adapter is a black rectangular block (sometimes called a power brick ) that performs the
same functions as the power supply box in a desktop PC: it lowers the voltage to what
the computer needs, and it converts the AC power to DC (see Figure 4.10). The plug that
connects the notebook power cord to the computer is typically a small round plug.
