Smartphone A smartphone is a handheld device that not only serves as a cell phone
but also functions as a basic computer, including running some applications (such as a
contact manager and an email reader) and accessing the Internet via a web browser. Some
smartphones have a keyboard, like the Blackberry; others, such as an iPhone, Droid (see
Figure 4-5), or Windows phone, have a touch screen that can pop up a virtual keyboard as
needed. Smartphones can substitute for computers for people who need frequent access to
the Internet no matter where they are.
