Figure 14.5 ( A ) Preoperative view of the neck/submental area of a 50-year-old woman and ( B ) 4-month postoperative view following laser lipolysis with the
CoolLipo system (1320 nm) at 15 W and 50 Hz. Signifi cant improvement in submental fat and skin tightening can be observed.

Figure 14.6 ( A ) A 62-year-old woman 2 years after aggressively performed liposuction by another physician with marked irregularities. ( B ) Six months after lipo-
suction with the 1320-nm CoolLipo system without aspiration of fat. Note the smoother appearance and tighter skin. Treatment parameters were 15 W, thermal
mode, and 8602 J, beginning skin temperature 23.2°C with a fi nal skin temperature of 34.2°C.
In 2010, Dibernardo conducted a randomized blinded split
abdomen study to evaluate skin shrinkage and skin tightening in
laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo MPX, Cynosure, Inc.) ver-
sus liposuction control in 10 patients (43). Skin shrinkage was
quantifi ed by measuring temporary ink markings and then cal-
culating the changes in surface area by region. Skin tightening
was quantifi ed by changes in the skin stiffness index measured
with an elasticity device in the treated regions. The author found
signifi cantly higher mean shrinkage ratios on the laser-treated
side than on the suction side both at the 1- and 3-month evalu-
ations. The skin stiffness and skin tightening were signifi cantly
higher on the laser-treated site at 3 months posttreatment.
A second multiplex device is also available from Sciton
(Palo Alto, California, USA) as ProLipo TM , incorporating the
