Figure 14.2 ( A ) Preoperative views of the arms of a 58-year-old woman and ( B ) 6-month postoperative views following laser lipolysis with the CoolLipo system
(1320 nm) at 17 W, 50 Hz, and 7466 J.
Histology by hematoxylin and eosin, methylene blue stains,
and electron microscopy showed new collagen and myofi bro-
blast formation compared with baseline. One limitation of the
study was that no patients were treated with liposuction alone.
A three-arm treatment study was conducted by Woodhall
and coworkers comparing the SmartLipo MPX device, to either
wavelength alone for LAL of various body areas (28). In the fi rst
study, both arms were treated with tumescent liposculpture
with one arm randomized to treatment with a subcutaneous
10-W, 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser. The second study treated mul-
tiple sites with half of the area randomized to receive 10-W,
1064-nm versus 10-W, 1320-nm system followed by aspiration
