Case 7
An 18-year-old female patient was diagnosed with vaginal atresia. In this case, the congenital anomaly of the female genito-
urinary tract included an absence of the vagina (vaginal atresia or agenesis), with normal ovaries and normal external genita-
lia (Fig. 5.10A). The anomaly was detected at adolescence because of abdominal pain from an obstructed uterovaginal tract.
Reconstruction of the vagina was scheduled to be done using a pudendal thigh fl ap. Because this fasciocutaneous fl ap uses
hair-bearing skin, LHR of the pudendal donor skin was performed prior to surgery. After six treatments with a 755-nm
GentleLase alexandrite laser, hairfree donor skin could be used to reconstruct a vagina without hair growth (Fig. 5.10B).
