Chapter 9. Documenting a 3D Model
After creating a 3D model, we frequently have to create construction or fabrication
drawings. First we are going to see how to define a layout and then the most important
commands and procedures to obtain automatic 2D drawings from 3D models.
Topics covered in this chapter are, how to:
• Obtain 2D drawings from 3D models
• Configure and print layouts
• Create model sections
• Create flattened projected views
• Create associative views that update automatically
• Create associative sections and details
Creating 2D drawings from 3D models
AutoCAD provides several methods and commands for creating 2D drawings from 3D
models. Along AutoCAD versions, this is a subject which is often improved. In this
chapter, we will discuss the commands that simplify the creation of 2D drawings such
as projections, sections, and details.
As all these drawings are normally intended to print, they should be placed on layouts.
We start this chapter by reviewing how to create and configure layouts and viewports.
