Note
When we start a 3D project, it is wise to start it near the WCS origin, with its
height aligned to the WCS Z axis.
Creating user coordinate systems
Following are the important commands and variables related to user coordinate sys-
tems, also known as UCS. The main command is aptly named UCS .
The UCS command
The UCS command (no alias, but it's easy) allows us to create and manage user co-
ordinate systems. There are several options for creating a UCS: from the UCS tool-
bar, by going to Tools | New UCS on the menu bar, the Coordinates panel in the
Home tab on the ribbon, or right-clicking over the UCS icon.
The command that can be seen on the command line informs us about the current
UCS and, by default, creates a UCS defined by three points, starting with the new
origin:
Command: UCS
Current ucs name: *WORLD*
Specify origin of UCS or [Face/Named/Object/
Previous/View/World/X/Y/Z/ZAxis] <World>: Point
Then, it asks for a point that defines the new X positive direction. If we press the
Enter key, the command ends and we have created a UCS that has a different origin
but maintains the same directions for the X and Y axes:
