to surrender and their leaders were summarily executed.
The failure of the Easter Rising resulted in increased repression by the British. But des-
pite nearly constant hangings and frequent torture of captured revolutionaries, the Na-
tionalists continued pushing for independence.
They would finally rise up en masse in 1919, launching a bloody war that resulted in
an equally bloody crackdown. They would ultimately win independence for Ireland -
minus the six counties that now make up Northern Ireland.
