reasons, is the Irish Car Bomb. This refers to the violence in Northern Ireland, and is a form
of dark humor that will not go over well with your bartender. Also, the Black-and-Tan is a
popular beer-based cocktail with a seemingly innocuous name. However, it's named after
the so-called “Black and Tan Squads,” the brutally violent enforcers who were sent to sup-
press dissent in Ireland during the War of Independence. Most Irish people are sufficiently
aware of their history to know this reference, and you don't want to appear ignorant or in-
sensitive.
