Table 5 . 1. Summay of ecogeographial (rows) and chorolo, cal (co lumns) catego is. In each ategoy, No. sp .
rprsents numbers at speies lvel and No. vas., fany, are numbers of taxa belon,ng to that categoy ony at
the lvel of subspeies or vaiey. All percentages are of row totals, and combine sp eies and inrspeiic txa.
Ecogeographic catego ries with the greatest prpotion of co stal nems are lsted higher in the table. Ch orolo,al

between 1 and 2. The aim of these categories is to
highlight only the strongest of rends in the sam-
ple, and the main trends are not altered signifi-
cantly by redesignaion of borderline cases.
4. Zambezian: widespread in Zambezian
region, but not in Sudanian, Somali-
Masai nor (widespread in) Guineo-
Congolian region.
5. Guine-Congolian: common in at least
Congolian region, extending someimes
into part of adjacent regions (see White,
1979). Including Guineo-Congolian
species extending beyond Africa to
Madagascar, but no further. (In the
summary in Table 5.1 , category 5 has
been joined with 6, under 'Afroropical' . )
6. Wide African: widespread, but not 1-5.
Including Afromontane species and
savanna species from north and south of
the Equator, but excluding species well
established in the Guineo-Congolian
region. (Joined with 5 in Table 5.1 . )
7. Tropical: species found beyond Indian
Ocean islands (even if only to India).
8. Unknown: especially for genera needing
revision, although many of these have
been excluded from the sample.
Geographical elemens
Although most species are widespread in the
coastal forests within the broad environmental
constraints outlined above, some species are
limited to a small range of neighbouring coastal
forests even though apparently suitable habitats
occur outside their range. Ninety-nine taxa of
resricted distribuion within the coast have been
put in the Norhen (52) and Southen (47)
geographical elements. Northen and Southen
elements occur in the coast only norh and south
of the Msangasi River. Most species (91/99) in
the geographical elements are coastal endemics.
Excepions include the Northen species
Dichapetalum fu auosum and the Southen species
Milettia eetveleana and Diospyros vrucosa.
Several Southen species, like Dpetes aruta,
have a fairly wide range extending southwards.
There are several borderline cases, for instance
