to a few easten enclaves but with a larger, very
closely related form, . sylviultor, ranging right
through the main forest block. It too appears to
owe its eistence as a unique endemic to the
inability or delay of . sylvicultor in colonising
these mountain forests.
Another mammal that may be sranded in the
easten mountains is Myosorex geata, a very
isolated representaive of the most conservaive
genus of African shrews. Other species occur on
Uganda mountains, and My osorex is relaively
common in the temperate cul-de-sac of South
Africa, which has served as a last refuge for
numerous ancient groups. The golden moles,
Chysochlois, have a similar distribuion patten
and it would seem that both these highly spe-
cialised insecivores may belong to very stable
'older' types which have enjoyed a long head-start
in developing their specialisaions.
None of these specialised insecivores are
exclusively forest animals but they may be ypical
of easten isolates as a whole in tending to com-
bine phyleic conservaism and a reined speciali-
saion to (relaively moist) local condiions.
The levels of phyleic age must vary enor-
mously from taxon to taxon, and it seems very
unlikely that the mammal fauna has been
acquired over one or two recruiments. It seems
much more probable that the fauna has developed
piecemeal over a very great and unknown period
of ime and that by no means all its members
derive as immigrants from the lowland forests of
the Zaire basin.
