More could be learnt of the distribution pat-
terns within the East Coast Escarpment forests if
more inventory work could be carried out in the
unknown and poorly explored areas. These areas
are menioned in the Conclusion.

Jensen & Stuart (1985) and Stuart (1986) have
provided a description of the subspeciation pat-
terns of montane forest birds in the Cameroun
Group, but no such study has previously been
carried out for the East Coast Escarpment. In
Table 10.6 we give distribuional details for each
of the 19 species with more than one subspecies
Apalis. The remaining bird communities fall into
two groupings, a northern one including East
Uzungwa, Nguru and Uluguru (characterised by
