Moreau (1966) was able to do in his analysis. In
this chapter we undertake a numerical and
staisical analysis of montane orest bird distribu-
ion in Africa, based upon newly available data as
well as other unpublished records. We then com-
pare he results of our analysis wih those
obtained by previous workers, notably Moreau
(1966) and Diamond & Hamilton (1980).
Fifty forests, or general forest areas, were con-
sidered in the analysis. Informaion on the species
composiion of the montane avifaunas was com-
piled from published records (principally Prigo-
gine, 1953, 1960, 1971, 1978, 1984, 1985; lJrban
& Brown, 1968; Hall & Moreau, 1970; Clancey,

1971; Beesley, 1972; Snow, 1978; Britton, 1980;
Dowsett, 1981; Irwin, 1981; Pinto, 1983; Stuart,
1983, 1986; Mann, 1985; Stuart &Jensen, 1985;
Hillman, 1986; Stuart et al., 1987). We are also
paricularly grateul to the late Dr A. Prigogine for
supplying data on montane forest bird disribuion
in the Alberine it forests, and to D. C. Moyer
for providing his unpublished data from the lJfipa
Plateau. For Cameroun and Tanzania, we have
also made use of data collected during our own
fieldwork. The species lists are probably complete
for some forests, and near complete for the
remainder. Details of the forests are given in
Table 10.1.
