In-Depth Information
Amauris (Nymphalidae). This African genus
numbers 15 species (Ackery & Vane-Wright,
1984) generally found in forests. In addiion to
ellioti, nine more species occur in the study area.
Ackery & Vane-Wright (1984) studied the phylo-
geny of the genus. For our purpose the results are
not very helpful, ellioti being the sister species of a
group of 12 species.
highest concentraion of endemics in a single area
is found in the Usambara Mountains where no
endemic montane grassland species occur.
The endemics resricted to a single area
account for 106 (i.e. 41 % ) of the 259 taxa listed in
Appendix 8.2. Thus, 59% of the taxa are found in
two or more areas. This percentage is slightly
higher than for grassland butterflies, and since the
total number of taxa is 4.5 imes as high there are
many more orest than grassland taxa indicaing
coherence between areas.
Table 8.5 gives eight areas formed by combina-
tions according to the steps menioned under
Methods (p. 134). Two combinaions, namely, the
Easten Arc mountains and what we have called
the Westen Border Range (from the Marungu
Plateau to the west side of Lake Mobuto - for-
Distinaion and coherence of areas of endemism
The list of potenial areas of endemism and their
endemicity is given in Table 8.4. There are srik-
ing differences with the montane grassland but-
terflies (Table 8.1): there are fewer potenial areas
without endemics, the endemics are not evenly
distributed over the areas with endemics, and the
