Bolivian and Peruvian Andes, south to Tierra del
Fuego), but according to Shirozu & Saigusa
(1973) the South American species belong to a
separate genus, Yramea, that is not even closely
related to Issoria.
Distinction and coherence of areas of endemism
The list of potenial areas of endemism and their
endemicity is given in Table 8.1. Two points are
immediately apparent: (i) 13 of the 27 potenial
areas of endemism have no endemics at all (and
thus are not areas of endemism, at least for grass-
land butterflies), and (ii) the endemics are rather
evenly distributed over the remaining areas,
without concentraions except in Ethiopia. There
are 26 taxa (50%) confined to a single area. The
remaining 26 taxa occur in two or more areas and
therefore can in principle be used to define larger
areas of endemism (that may include areas
Neocoenyra (Nymphalidae). There are 12 species
distributed from Ethiopia to Angola and Malawi,
along forest margins, in woodland, grassland and
arid habitats. Apart from the four species restric-
ted to the grasslands in the Easten Arc moun-
tains there are seven other species in the area
covered here.
