Such irregular distribuions, with diferences in
alitudinal distribuion between the eastern and
westen sides ofthe mountain, are in good agree-
ment with the disribuion of other East Arican
forest organisms (Hamilton, 1976, 1982) and is
probably correlated with the uneven distribuion
of rainall over the mountain. The easten and
upper parts of the westen side of Uluguru are
much wetter than the lower parts of the westen
side.
pared with forest linyphiid faunas in the Mediter-
ranean mountains, where a single mountain
localiy (n a huge mountain range) can hold more
species than the total known Easten Arc moun-
tain linyphiid fauna (Bosmans, Maelfait & De
Kimpe, 1986).
The apparently low numbers of linyphiids in
the Easten Arc mountains are in accordance with
findings from other African habitats (Bosmans,
1977, 1979; Jocque, 198la) and could indicate a
low relaive number of linyphiid species in Africa.
It is important here to emphasise that although
this is apparently the case for the linyphiids,
other spider taxa show different pattens. Spiders
of the amilies Lycosidae, Salicidae and
Gnaphosidae seem to be much more diverse in
the tropics
Discussion
Divesiy
The number of forest species in the Easten Arc
mountains seems low if one judges from the
mountains invesigated unil now. It is low com-
(Russell-Smith,
198lb; Jocque,
1984).
