(*) According to Jocque (1983), Aypena Simon, 1894 should be a senior synonym of Callitrichia Fage, 1936, and
Wunderlich (1978) has suggested that Oedothorax Bertkau, 1883 should be a senior synonym of To schia di
Caporiacco, 1949 and Callitrichia Fage, 1936. I prefer to keep the species in the tradiional genera until revisions
of the genera in quesion has been carried out. The Atypena species described by Jocque & Scharff, (1986) are
therefore referred to Callitrichia: Callitrichia mira Jocque & Scharff, 1986); Callitrichia pileata Jocque & Scharff,
1986); Callitichia pilosa Jocque & Scharff, 1986); Callitichia simplex Jocque & Scharff, 1986).
Nine genera are endemic to Africa, of which
two (Uluurella and Ophynia) are sill known only
from East Africa and Uluurela only from the
Easten Arc mountains.
One genus, Metalptphantes, might have a
much larger distribuion. Members of this genus
have also been recorded from Sri Lanka (van
Helsdingen, 1985). Very little has been published
on linyphiids in other parts of the southern hemi-
sphere (Oriental and Neotropical regions) and the
taxonomical affinity of the endemic African
genera is therefore unknown. Affiniies between
