In-Depth Information
6. Place each end post in its hole. Hold each post in position so that it leans away
from the center of the vineyard about 8 to 12 in. Fill in around the base of the post
with gravel and soil.
7. Tamp the gravel and soil, so that the posts are secure.
Drilling Wire Holes
Note: The exact height of the fruiting wires should be determined by the height of the
person who will be pruning and tending the vines.
1. Measure 14 in. above the ground and drill a ¼ in. hole through the center of posts
#1 to #8 facing into the center of the vineyard. This will be for the bottom (irriga-
tion) wire.
2. Measure 28 to 36 in. above the ground and drill another ¼ in. hole through the
center of end posts #1 to #8. This will be for the fruiting wire.
3. Measure down 2 in. from the top of each end post #1 to #8 and drill two ¼ in. holes
side by side, for the top shoot position wires.
4. Measure halfway between the fruiting wire and the top wires on each end post #1
to #8 and drill two more ¼ in. holes for the lower shoot position wires.
5. If using wire vices (see step 3b in next section), drill the same set of holes in posts
#9 to #16.
Installing the Wires and Irrigation Tubing
1. Cut the bottom wire for row #1 at least 60 ft. in length and place the wire in the
bottom hole on post #1. Wrap one end of the wire around the post, thread it back
through the wire in the hole, and twist it tightly with the pliers. This end of the wire
will always be secured so you do not need to adjust it. You will adjust the tension
at the other end of the row with a Grippler tool or wire vice.
