Vine Growth on the VSP Trellis
VINEYARD IRRIGATION
In their wild form, grapevines are fairly drought-tolerant, and in some regions, vines re-
quire only small amounts of irrigation as a supplement to rainfall and groundwater. Factors
such as your climate, the vine spacing, and your average rainfall all influence the amount
of irrigation water you will need, but most home vineyards in most places will require irrig-
ation. However, one of the big problems I have seen with home vineyards is overwatering.
You cannot water your grapes like you do your lawn or garden.
Although most municipal water sources are generally good, you might want to ask the
local water service for the mineral content of the water supply. If you have a well, and have
used the water to successfully grow other food or ornamental plants, you are probably not
going to need a test for mineral content.
