Buying Grapevines
Some history is important here. The development of rootstocks and varieties goes back
to antiquity. Most of the early definitive work was done by German, French, and Italian
grape breeders, but in the late 19th century, the University of California, Davis, and Cornell
University in New York state were also researching grape breeding. And, particularly since
the 1970s and 1980s, breeders have also developed many root-stocks and varieties that are
suited to North American soils and climates.
For each region, and even each vineyard, there are some choices of both rootstock
and grape variety that are better than others. The simplest way to choose grape varieties
is based on your taste, and by finding out which grapes are being successfully produced
in your local area. However, I am willing to stick out my neck somewhat and make a few
recommendations based on my experience and knowledge.

I will also suggest what I believe are some of the best rootstocks for home vineyards.
Different nurseries will carry different clones, depending on availability and demand.
I strongly recommend that you buy your grapes from a reputable supplier, whether locally
or by mail order. For recommendations, ask your county, state, or other local agricultural
advisor, or get advice from nearby growers, a Master Gardener group, or a local vineyard
supplier. Most important is that the nursery should sell certified plant stock. The California
