In-Depth Information
when you are tilling. In some cases, you may have to remove big rocks and other barriers
and improve drainage using subterranean drains (such as French drains) to remove midyear
standing water. Before embarking on an underground drainage system, speak to a vineyard
consultant or a soil engineer.
Optimum temperatures, pH, and the presence of contaminants are harder to judge
without soil testing. If you are planting a small home vineyard and you do not want to do
soil tests, first take a look at the property. Do other plants such as grasses, shrubs, or flowers
thrive there now? Barren ground, similar to that typically found under pines or other trees,
is a good clue you do not have a well-balanced soil, or you have compacted soil.
Soil Nutrition
There are three key nutrients and nine other micronutrients in soil that have an impact
on grape vine and wine quality. These vary from one region to another, and even from one
backyard to another.
The best vineyard soils combine fertility and good drainage. Too many obstacles,
such as stones and boulders, can obstruct good root growth. Try to remove as
many big rocks as is practical.
