In-Depth Information
→ Are well aerated (contain plenty of oxygen) and well drained (don't have standing
water during the growing season).
→ Have optimum temperatures, and pH levels between 5.5 and 7 pH.
→ Contain no toxic substances or contaminants.
The first three characteristics on this list can probably be determined by a simple judg-
ment call on your part. If you are not confident in the quality of your soil, then dig a hole
in the proposed site for a better evaluation. The hole should be at least 3 feet deep, so you
may wish to rent a post-hole digger. After you dig the hole, fill it with water and evaluate
how long it takes for the water to drain. If the hole is still full of water after 24 hours, then
you may have a drainage problem.
A vineyard planted on a hill can be more challenging in terms of equipment and
labor, but in marginal climates a south-facing slope will maximize the amount of
heat and sunlight that the grapes receive.
To improve drainage in soils, the first option is to till it (loosen and aerate). You can
do this with a rototiller, a discer, or a backhoe, as long as you break up the earth down
at least a foot. If the soil is very compacted, you may want to add some soil amendments
