and North Carolina. In the South and Southeast, grapes are grown in Kentucky, Arkansas,
Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, and New Mexico. In the Midwest, a growing body of know-
ledge has developed for cold-winter growers in Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois,
Indiana, and Wisconsin. The Northwest has many fine commercial and hobby vineyards
in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. And in eastern Canada, there are thriving
wineries in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. In fact, there are vineyards to be found in
some of the most extreme locations of cold, heat, and humidity throughout North America.
Thomas Jefferson was one of the earliest vintners in the United States, experi-
menting with both European and American grapevines. Today, Virginia wineries
continue to make wines with vinifera grapes as well as local varieties like Norton.

What are the differences and similarities within your regional climate where grapes are
grown and the location of your planned vineyard? Are you on the side of a mountain or
beside a lake? Does your property slope? If so, in which direction? Are there other weather-
moderating factors nearby?
