TENDRIL A tentacle-like climbing structure that emerges from a node and attaches or
wraps around adjacent shoots or wires.
TENSIOMETER A type of soil moisture sensor.
TIGHTENER (ALSO KNOWN AS TENSIONER) Devices used at the end post (sometimes both)
of the trellis system to help pull the wires taut and keep them there.
TRAINING The process of training the growing vine on a trellis system to ensure a good
mature vine structure.
TRANSLOCATION The process by which chemical materials and nutrients move through
the vine. For example, sugar can be exported to either the shoot tip, grape cluster, root sys-
tem, or other permanent parts, such as the trunk, for storage.
TRANSPIRATION The process whereby water, during sunlight hours, moves through the
plant's system, up from the roots, and out through the underside of the leaves through the
stomata.
TRUNK The center portion of the vine above ground.

VARIETY Any of a group of genetically identical plants within a species that have dis-
tinct, uniform, and stable characteristics, such as Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and
others.
VERAISON The stage of a berry midway through its development, when it changes from
hard to soft, and the color changes from green to its harvesting color (depending on the
type of grape it will turn to black, blue, golden, green, pink, or yellow).
