PHOTOSYNTHESIS
The process by which green plant tissues convert energy from the sun
into food for the plant in the form of sugar.
PHYLLOXERA
A root louse that attacks grape roots, causing stunted growth and vine
death.
POST-VERAISON
The period after veraison, when the grapes begin to soften and develop
their final color.
POWDERY MILDEW
The most serious and widespread disease in vineyards in terms of ex-
pense and loss of crop yield.
PRUNING
The process of removing parts of the vine to prepare it for next growing sea-
son's pattern of growth.

REFRACTOMETER
An instrument that measures the percentage of sugar, or Brix, in grape
juice or must.
RENEWAL SPUR
A spur that forms on a cane from the previous year's spur.
ROOTSTOCK
The bottom part of a grapevine to which the upper part, or scion, is grafted.
Some grapevines are grown on their own roots.
ROOT ZONE
The area below ground where the roots grow.
ROW ORIENTATION
The compass direction to which the rows in a vineyard are oriented.
