BLENDING Mixing together two or more different varieties to make a single wine.
BOTRYTIS CINEREA (ALSO KNOWN AS BUNCH ROT) A fungus disease that affects ripe grapes
well into the season.
BRIX The percent of sugar in the grape, grape juice, or must.
BUD The initial swelling from a cane that will develop into leaves, tendrils, clusters, or
other buds.
BUD BURST (ALSO KNOWN AS BUD BREAK) The point in spring where buds begin to emerge
and unfurl from the canes. This usually occurs when the mean daily temperatures are 50°F
(10°C).
BUNCH (OR CLUSTER) A group of grapes growing from a single stem.
BUNCH ROT See Botrytis cinerea .

CALCAREOUS CLAY A clay soil with high levels of calcium due to limestone or chalk.
Believed by some to be the best soil for growing grapes.
CANE One-year-old wood that emerges as a shoot from the main trunk or cordons, and
bears leaves and grapes.
CANOPY MANAGEMENT The process of physically manipulating the canes, shoots, and
leaves to balance foliage and fruit growth and promote photosynthesis. Includes pruning,
thinning and suckering shoots, positioning shoots between the upper training wires, and re-
moving excess shoot growth around the fruiting zone.
CANOPY The upper portion of the canes consisting of the leaves.
CERTIFIED PLANT STOCK A plant that has been approved by a governing body to be
healthy and virus-free.
