In-Depth Information
Flea Beetles
Native to eastern North America. Was once highly prevalent in New York vineyards.
Small metallic blue insects appear early in spring. The beetles jump when disturbed. In
summer, larvae and adults feed on leaves, but overwintering adults do the most damage in
late spring and early summer, as they attack developing buds.
CONTROL
Yellow sticky traps placed along the row may capture emerging beetles in spring. You can
try to hand pick beetles or knock them into a bucket of soapy water, but they are tiny and
fast. Treat summer adults with pyrethrum or diatomaceous earth. Control weeds.
Glassy-winged Sharpshooter
The glassy-winged sharpshooter is almost ½ in. long and is dark brown with a lighter
underside. In 2001 it became a serious new pest in California. Native to the southeast
United States, this leaf-hopper was first seen in California in 1990 and is now found
throughout much of the state. It is particularly a threat to California vineyards due to its
ability to spread Xylella fastidoisa , the bacterium that causes Pierce's disease.
