In-Depth Information
Management of powdery mildew is done mainly by prevention. Practice good canopy man-
agement techniques such as keeping an open canopy. This allows the sun and wind to dry
the vines to prevent dampness. I recommend leaf pulling and shoot thinning from early
summer to late summer.
Sulfur has historically been the choice of sprays for powdery mildew. I use Stylet-Oil
and in the early part of the season add copper to the application. Begin your powdery mil-
dew spray after bud burst and continue every two weeks through the damp or rainy part of
the season, until veraison. When you have grapes to harvest, do not spray after veraison.
Powdery mildew appears early in the season and can cause a white fuzz on young
grapes and black spots and streaks on the canes.
