In-Depth Information
For example, if the plant had weak growth during the growing season, try pruning
every other spur to one bud and the remaining spur to two buds. Remember, most of our
new spurs, this year and hereafter, will be renewal spurs.
If the plant was excessively vigorous during the growing season (too many leaves,
long internodes, and many lateral shoots), prune to increase the number of buds on the
spurs to create more shoots. For instance, try pruning every other spur to three buds and the
remaining spur to two buds.
Well-balanced Pruning
On mature vines, you can see the spurs that have been carefully selected to serve as
renewal spurs during each year's dormant pruning.
