Make clean pruning cuts with a sharp, sterile blade. Clean the pruners fre-
quently. When canes start to reach a larger size, you may have to use loppers
rather than hand pruners.
FIRST YEAR
The objective in the first year after planting is to produce a strong trunk, and cordons if
possible. Root growth is rapid in the first year and then levels off to be consistent thereafter.
Training
As the vines grow, secure the strongest growing shoot of each vine with green plastic
tape to its grape stake, about every 3 to 4 inches. Make sure that shoot has several leaves on
it, as you will need these to form the cordons. This process develops the permanent trunk
of your vine, so you want the trunk to grow straight and parallel with the stake. Once the
