of the Thames. The springs leak from the water table beneath Hartley Hill and may be
found a short distance down the A436 in a tree-clad hollow north of the road.
This eventually brings you to the A435, a few paces north of the Seven
Springs crossroads (grid ref: 968172). Note For refreshments, the Seven
Springs Inn is found a short distance ahead alongside the A436.
Cross the road with caution to a Cotswold Way sign which directs you to
the right along a minor road, soon passing a windpump in the left-hand
field. When the road curves left keep straight ahead on an enclosed foot-
path, but at a junction you bear left and follow the left-hand boundary of
an enclosed rectangular meadow rich in wild flowers in springtime. Enter a
spinney, then out again along the scarp edge. To your right the transmit-
ter towers on Cleeve Common can be seen once more, with Cheltenham
below.
This is a fine stretch with splendid views overlooking the Severn Vale.
The path rises along the scarp edge of Charlton Kings Common to Hartley
Hill and, among gorse bushes with numerous hollows where ragstone has
been extracted for drystone walling, onto the flat-topped Leckhampton Hill
with its trig point and more fine views. Continue along the scarp edge and,
