In-Depth Information
So, amble along the street (Manorway) on entering, then swing sharp
right where it forks, to pass the old market cross. The street forks again -
should you need refreshment, keep straight ahead to find the Mount Inn,
otherwise bear right and wander up to a delightful thatched cottage where
you veer left and follow a track that rises out of the village. Keep on the
track until a waymark directs you to the right through a gate by a pond
(Stanton Reservoir). Work your way round and above the left-hand side of
the reservoir, staying close to the right-hand boundary of a sloping mead-
ow, and then go into the adjacent field. Resume direction, but now with
the field boundary on your left, and crossing a stile come to a tight cleave,
or dry valley, among trees.
The medieval market cross in Stanton
Go up the cleave to Shenberrow Hill, where you bear left past a farm
by a hill fort, and follow the track ahead. This takes you beside Long Hill
Plantation on the scarp edge, then curves to the right to a cattlegrid and
a junction of tracks. Bear left then right on a continuing track. Shenberrow
Hill above Stanton is the site of an Iron Age hill fort of about 2½ acres (1 hectare), which
was excavated in 1935. Of the various artefacts revealed, ther were pieces of pottery, a
bronze bracelet and two bone needles.
