Accommodation Broadway and Chipping Campden
Refreshments Broadway and Chipping Campden
As the final stage of the long walk from Bath, this is something of an up and down
course, perhaps a little strenuous on account of the height to be gained and lost, but
full of variety and interest. There are some fine long views to draw the eye, easy tracks
on the rim of the escarpment, the much-lauded village of Broadway to explore, Broad-
way Tower to visit and, at the end of it all, glorious Chipping Campden to underscore
the pleasures of 102 miles (164km) of Cotswold wayfaring.
The splendours of Stanton lead directly to an uphill route where meadows and wood-
land clumps adorn the slopes of Shenberrow Hill. On the escarpment yet another hill
fort is to be found. Heading north along a track with a view the Vale of Evesham swal-
lows distance far below. The way then brings you down to woods and fields and in-
to the crowded streets of Broadway. There's no peace to be had here, but the lovely
buildings that line the wide main street hold your interest until it's time to climb again,
this time to Broadway Tower, from where it's claimed you can see 12 counties on a
clear day. Attempting to put names to features in that vast panorama is likely to in-
volve much argument and speculation. Better to remain ignorant and simply enjoy the
view! From Broadway Tower to Fish Hill is a green, undulating walk of little distance.
Next follows a level stretch of arable farmland, then along the Mile Drive and onto
Dover's Hill for the last big view of the walk, before slipping innocently into Chipping
Campden, a market town without equal and an elegant finish to an uplifting experien-
ce.
Please see map, Southbound, Section One.
Stanton is so small a village that to walk straight through would occupy
only a few short minutes, though to do so would be insensitive. This is a
community to treasure, with streets to stroll along at an unhurried pace,
cottages with roses over doorways to admire, and the wolds rising behind
as if to offer protection.
