Birdlip stands on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment on the course of the Roman
Ermin Street (or Ermin Way), which ran from Gloucester (Glevum) to Cirencester
(Corinium), and is not to be confused with Ermine Street (or Way), which runs from
London to Lincoln.
