of Berkeley Castle. Lord Lisle, who had challenged Lord Berkeley to do battle, was shot
in the face then stabbed to death. His retainer army then fled while his house was
sacked by Berkeley's men. Around 150 men lost their lives in the fighting.
An enclosed path continues from the lane and becomes almost a tunnel
among trees. Along this section of the walk note an old doorway dated
1607 in the left-hand wall. The path finally emerges onto the B4060 again,
which you cross straight ahead to walk down a metalled lane. Soon after
crossing a stream you come to some cottages and climb out of the lane
over a stile on the left. Go up the sloping meadow to a second stile, then
across a large field to a narrow road near the entrance to Park Farm House
(grid ref: 743972).
A Cotswold Way sign is found to the left of the house, directing you into
a hillside meadow. The way now leads through linking meadows, then into
woodland where you cross a gully noted for some gas pipes nearby. The
continuing route then rises up the wooded scarp face to emerge beside the
golf course on Stinchcombe Hill .
STINCHCOMBE HILL
Stinchcombe Hill is a high spur of land projecting from the escarpment, with magni-
ficent vantage points from which to study the distant Brecon Beacons, Malvern Hills
and Berkeley Castle. A topograph near Drakestone Point highlights some of the salient
features in the panorama. The hilltop was given to the public by Sir Stanley Tubbs in
1930, and now houses Dursley Golf Club.
