SOMERSET MONUMENT
The Somerset Monument stands more than 120ft (36m) high, and was erected to the
memory of General Lord Somerset, a son of the fifth Duke of Beaufort, after serving
under Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo.
The Somerset Monument stands on a hill a short distance from Hawkesbury Upton
On coming out of Claypit Wood maintain direction along the top edge
of a field, then swing left through a gateway on a continuing track which
bends to the right and takes you down to the Kilcott Valley and a narrow
road opposite cottages in the hamlet of Lower Kilcott (grid ref: 787890).
Turn left and walk along the country lane with Kilcott Brook for company
for about ¾ mile (1km), passing as you do Kilcott Mill, with its attractive
stone buildings and millpond on your right. Soon after passing the mill a
track breaks away to the right into the Tresham Valley.
