HINTON HILL FORT
Hinton Hill Fort is also known as Dyrham (or Burrill) Camp. A decisive battle was
fought here in AD 577 between the Saxons and ancient Britons, resulting in the Saxons
gaining control of Gloucester, Cirencester and Bath, and the Britons being driven back
to Wales and Somerset.
Cross the road with great care at the nearby traffic island, bear left a few
paces, then head to the right on a track between hedges. This leads into
a field where you continue ahead to the top corner where there's a CW
waymark post. Turn left and follow a die-straight path leading to Lower
Lapdown Farm where, after passing a house on your left, you come onto
the farm drive. Walk ahead to a barn, then curve right and follow the drive
to Marshfield Road. Turn left, cross the M4 motorway, and keep along the
road into Tormarton (accommodation, refreshments). Just before reach-
ing the Portcullis Inn (grid ref: 767786) take the road on the right which
leads to the parish church.
TORMARTON
Tormarton has Saxon origins and a Norman church. Its name means 'the farmstead
on the boundary by the thorn-trees'. Standing close to the borders of Wiltshire and
Gloucestershire, it shelters among fields a short distance away from the M4 motorway
and busy A46.
