to cross three fields, the third of which overlooks a large pond. At the far
side of this last field go through a kissing gate and a spinney to Greenway
Lane. Walk uphill along this steep and narrow lane, passing one or two
farm buildings. As you stroll up the lane allow your eyes to wander across
the bowl of countryside falling behind and to the side of you. It's a lovely
gentle landscape, especially when seen on a bright sunny afternoon, with
cows in the pastures and birds and rabbits among the hedgerows.
The Granville Monument on Lansdown Hill
Greenway Lane brings you to the busy A46, a road that will be crossed
and recrossed a number of times in the days ahead. On this occasion you
cross to the eastern side and walk uphill on a minor road which leads into
the village of Cold Ashton (grid ref: 751727), where there's accommod-
ation to be had. (For refreshments, see Section 2, which takes you to the
White Hart pub, a short walk north of the church.)
