In-Depth Information
in a few paces the way turns along a bridleway on the right. Rising up
Dean Hill, the good clear bridleway then curves round the eastern slopes
of Kelston Round Hill, a lovely summit crowned with trees, soon to be seen
to full advantage from Prospect Stile.
A bridleway takes the route round the east flank of Kelston Round Hill
North of Kelston Round Hill the bridleway route brings you to a track
where you turn left, then right through a deer fence into a plantation.
Walk up the slope where you leave the deer fence and soon go through a
kissing gate to the topograph at Prospect Stile (grid ref: 713683), where
you should pause to contemplate the magnificent view behind you. This is
one of the great views of the Cotswold Way. Savour it as you catch your
breath.
Bear left along the edge of the escarpment and cross the end of Bath
Racecourse. Over this continue ahead and, on coming to the ditch and
rampart of Little Down Hill Fort , the way curves right and soon after
goes to the left to wander through the central part of the fort across a
field. On the western side descend a short slope (splendid views ahead),
then curve right to a kissing gate next to a field gate. Soon after come
onto a track rising gently to a metal gate, through which you enter Lans-
down Golf Course alongside Pipley Wood.
LITTLE DOWN HILL FORT
The hill fort marks the most westerly point on the Cotswold Way. This is an Iron Age
site covering some 15 acres (6 hectares). The low earth ramparts and single protect-
ive ditch are easily identified.
