Inside data categories, the use of complex types of data
rather than tables

is decided by the logical designer, at the
time of the derivation of the semantic model. The criteria for
choosing between complex data types and tables depend on
the MDM software tool.

10.5. Derivation procedures
We are now going to describe the derivation procedures
used for the semantic classes, then the business operations.
10.5.1.
Derivation of the semantic classes
The nested data types are systematically removed at the
borders of the domains of business objects and data
categories. They can be removed even inside the data
categories for ergonomic reasons (see Table 10.1). When a
nested data type is removed, it is replaced by a key or a list
of foreign keys according to the data cardinality designed at
the semantic level. The use of multi-valued attributes is
possible as the data analyst is not obliged to respect the
normal forms of the relational oriented approach.
