Chapter 8
The Semantic Modeling Framework
This chapter outlines the framework of semantic
modeling 1 . We will not return to the justification for the
MDM approach, nor to its return on investment. We have
already detailed these aspects in the previous parts of this
topic. Semantic modeling is based on UML which offers a
standard and universal language to represent knowledge in
information systems, and is consequently neutral vis-à-vis
MDM tools.
8.1. Establishing the framework of the method
Semantic modeling is a separate discipline. Its object is to
construct and maintain a knowledge base of a company's
business, understandable by all actors involved in the
Information System and its underlying IT systems. This type
of modeling is positioned in a methodological framework
which encompasses other disciplines, notably the analysis
and design of organizations, logical modeling and technical
architecture.
1 . The detailed processes are described in the following chapter.
