structure. This master data element is, firstly, validated
from a business point of view by a rule which specifies that
the level of the classification does not exceed a certain depth.
Once this validation has been checked, the new classification
key is present in the data repository, but it finds itself under
the control of a data approval process. As long as this process
has not been completed, the data is not considered to be
available to the users of the data repository. After the
validation from the business point of view, this data
approval process has automatically delivered a validation
request to a manager of the organization. This validation is
at an organizational level; it implies the intervention of a
manager who gives or does not give approval. If the
agreement is given, the master data element is validated. If
not, according to the organizational requirements, either the
update is canceled, and/or a request for modification is sent
to the user responsible for data entry.
The MDM system allows the modeling of the data
approval process and its automatic execution, without any IT
software development. It relates to the usual workflow
concept and tool already well known within companies.
6.8. Access rights management
As with all data management systems, an MDM system
allows the management of access rights at all levels within
the data repository, like, for example, access to a group of
data, to a particular data element, or to all occurrences of the
same data object corresponding to a certain selection criteria,
etc. The configuration of access rights is dealt with by a data
repository which re-uses the governance functions brought
by the MDM system.
All the governance functions of the MDM system, like
version control and management of use contexts, are subject
to the management of access rights. For example, an MDM
