6.4.2. The automatic detection of shared data
The management of contexts also allows the analysis of
existing data repositories so as to detect, automatically, the
level of possible fatorization of data.
For example, we experienced the case of a regionalized
bank whose current data repository, prior to the
implementation of MDM, was duplicated by a simple copy
and paste, as many times as there were regional offices. As
the number of branches was high, around forty, these
duplications presented serious issues of quality. An update of
one data element, prior to being applied to all branches, was
subject to a costly IT procedure updating forty databases.
Over time, the bank found it difficult to keep track of the
local branch updates; the comparison of the differences
