Understanding the replica set election process
The
secondary
node with the majority of votes becomes a
primary
node. If the previ-
ous
primary
node becomes available again, it will become a
secondary
node.
The following diagram demonstrates a replica set with a primary and secondary member
and one
arbiter
node:
In the preceding replica set, because we have only one
secondary
and an
arbiter
node, if the
primary
node becomes unavailable; the
arbiter
node votes for the only
secondary
node available, and the replica set will choose the only secondary member as
the primary. However, the
arbiter
node won't change its state.
