Trying to extricate myself politely from this semi-conversation was not going well. I
proffered several désolés (sorry) which didn't work at all. It just caused monsieur to issue a
further inflamed stream of what sounded like fairly fruity oaths, before slamming the phone
down. I consoled myself that it could have been worse. At least I was spared the agony of
him ringing back, because he didn't have our telephone number.
We were now left with thirteen properties - not a good omen. However, this subse-
quently resolved itself when one of the independent agents called in high dudgeon. He ex-
plained that the owner he represented had decided he didn't want to deal with an English
agent and had promptly taken his former silk farm off the market.
What fascinating people the French are. I chose not to tell Jack this and congratulated
myself on avoiding the 'Baker's dozen'.
