In-Depth Information
After about thirty seconds it became abundantly clear that we couldn't possibly sleep
here. It was a mezzanine with a difference. The floor was fixed between four pillars and
in place of walls there were two lines of heavy-ply guide-ropes which caused the whole
design to look a bit like a floating boxing ring.
Then things became even more complicated because the bed was huge and covered
most of the floor area. This meant that one would have to tread extremely carefully to avoid
plummeting over the ropes to meet a grisly end skewered on a clump of incense sticks be-
low.
This bedroom was only suitable for teetotallers with strong bladders because a quick
midnight jaunt to the loo (wherever that might be) was absolutely out of the question. So,
whilst madame was quite ravished by her eyrie, I am afraid we were not.
Back in the galley, I could hear the familiar tinkling of keys coming from Jack's pock-
et. It could have been mistaken for a personal item belonging to madame but the agitated
expression on Jack's face confirmed my guess. It was definitely time to go.
