Harry and the Gypsy
“What bloody well beats me is how that chap manages to hold down a job like that
down!”
“Who, darling?”
“You know that estate agent bloke with two Christian names.”
“Oh you mean Charles . Yes, he does seem to have a delicate constitution.”
“I mean who would credit it? He's supposed to be a specialist in selling rural properties
so half his life ought to be spent driving up hills and looking down into valleys. Especially
in this area! It reminds me of that decorator you once hired who was allergic to paint.”
“Yes, that's true. That was a bit unfortunate. I reckon for poor Charles it's either a bad
choice of location or career, I'm just not sure which.”
“Mind you, quite honestly I'm not sure what kind of work would suit Charles. The
bloke needs a full-time nursemaid! And then, of course, there's that great big girl of a gate-
keeper who's frightened of a miniature dog. I hope the burglars around here don't bark!”
Jack was driving at break-neck speed towards our next venue and, after a fairly long
period of silence, had thought fit to offer these latest opinions on humankind. In many ways
it wasn't such a bad thing to focus on Charles and Chico because at least it kept his critical
mind off any commentary about the domaine . We'd failed again and, in an effort to cur-
tail any further complaints, I popped another morsel of lunch from signore's picnic into his
mouth. It was quite delicious with the added advantage of being eggless, thus keeping edible
flying debris to a workable minimum.
The terrain on our 112 kilometre dash across and up country was fairly undulating but,
other than to slow us down a bit, it didn't result in any massive delay. In fact Jack's treat-
ment of the vehicle (as I clung onto the door handle) did cause me to remark on how well
it was performing, especially considering its recent battering during the storm and having to
deal with so many poor quality tracks.
“Well, now you've gone and done it!” said Jack scowling at me, “ every time you tempt
fate like that there's a disaster . I just can't believe you said it!”
