In-Depth Information
• In his oil on canvas depiction of the art-
ist-performer Senecio, http://www.wikip-
aintings.org/en/paul-klee/senecio-1922,
Paul Klee (1879-1940) applied geometric
shapes within a circle and subtle color
planes to convey connections between his
style in art, a psychological portrait, and
the dramatic performance of the subject.
Paul Klee taught at the Bauhaus school of
design and published topics (e.g., Klee,
1948/1979; 1969) about his theory of art
and principles of applying graphic ele-
ments. In 1933 the Nazis exiled Klee from
Germany and removed his art works from
German galleries.
• Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) created
art and design objects, such as posters,
jewelry, stained glass, and costumes ap-
plying decorative, subtle, linear draw-
ings; he became one of proponents of the
Art Nouveau style. For example a poster
“F. Champenois, Imprimeur-Éditeur,”

Mucha_-_F._Champenois_Imprimeur-
Éditeur.jpg conveys notions that suggest
elegance and grace.
• A painting by Rene Magritte (1898-1967)
“The Treachery of Images” (1928-9), http://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MagrittePipe.
jpg is an artwork with a rich semiotic con-
tent. The artist shows an image of a real
thing, and then denies it's meaning in writ-
ing, thus confusing a thing, its depiction,
and it's reference.
http://www.pablo-ruiz-picasso.net/work-

ist supported those who fought against the
nationalist dictator Franko.
“Madonna” (1984-5) by Edvard Munch
(1863-1944), (http://en.wikipedia.org/
wiki/File:Edvard_Munch_-_Madonna_
(1894-1895).jpg, painted in expressionistic
style, has been often interpreted as a depic-
tion of sensuality and the duality of love
and pain. The painting, along with “The
Scream,” was stolen in 2004 and recovered
in 2006.
“Reservoir” (1961) by Robert
Rauschenberg, http://americanart.si.edu/
collections/search/artwork/?id=20593 is a
work combined in oil, pencil, fabric, wood,
and metal. Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was
bringing together images of objects “to act
in the gap between art and life,” and so
his works contained rich semantic content
alluding to the viewer's everyday experi-
ence. The artist's work influenced a shift
from the Abstract Expressionism to the
Pop Art style.
“Discretion Advised” (Figure 7) resulted
from examining facts about the biology inspired
research conducted in a growing number of fields.
Biology inspired art has been gaining importance,
as much as biology-inspired computing. We ex-
plore what happens among living creatures and
draw conclusions as we see it fit.
Flocks of birds, schools of fish, and man-made
constructions make us think of shortcuts, meta-
phors and analogies to communicate faster. I wrote
the fish image in Fortran with three-dimensional
wireframe.
“The persistence of memory” (1931)
by Salvador Dali (1904-1989), http://
e n . w i k i p e d i a . o r g / w i k i / F i l e : Th e _
Persistence_of_Memory.jpg, is an iconic
work of Dali significant because of its
surrealistic style that conveys beyond the
words its semiotic content. “Night fish-
ing at Antibes” (1939) by Pablo Picasso,
Let's learn to be silent from schools of fish,
Let our actions be sound without noise.
